Wayne State Recipient of the Lara Rutan Scholarship 2018

Leah Lowenberg Leah is currently completing her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Wayne State University (WSU). She graduated from WSU in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Departmental Honors and a co-major of University Honors. She graduated with Summa Cum Laude Institutional Honors, was on the Dean’s list each semester, and is a member of both the Golden Key International Honor Society and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Leah was also fortunate to study abroad in Asia, where she had the opportunity to learn more about people from diverse cultures and lifestyles. Prior to PA school, Leah was a medical assistant at Mendelson Kornblum Orthopedic and Spine Specialists, where she worked closely with many PAs and physicians to provide quality patient care. Additionally, she was a research assistant at the Family Emotion Laboratory where she investigated self-regulatory skills and emotional competence among parents and their children. Leah presented her research on predictors of healthcare utilization for lowincome urban families at the 2017 Researchers of Biobehavioral Health in Urban Settings Today (RoBUST) Fall Symposium at WSU.

Throughout her studies, Leah was heavily involved on campus and in the community. At WSU, she served as the elected President Director of the Pre-Professional Medical Society and the Student Senate Liaison for the Academic Senate Curriculum and Instruction Committee. She was also involved with the Pre-Physician Assistant Society and Honors Student Association. Within her community, Leah volunteers with special needs
children and directs a weekly choir at the assisted living apartments. In addition, she founded a one-on-one tutoring program for underprivileged Detroit students at the Youth Connection, a St. John Providence Hospital Partner. She received the Meta Carmen Award for her exemplary interpersonal relationship development. Leah is presently finishing her clinical PA rotations in New York, where she will be practicing after graduation.
